LAS VEGAS, Nevada - It looks like Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) and its cohorts are in the state of despondency, trying hard to install a rematch between pound-for-pound best Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez.
Despite the brilliant performance of Marquez against easily hittable, less defensive and even slower Michael Katsidis of Australia last Saturday, many in the mainstream media still think Marquez
has not shown a solid argument enough to make a good case for a trilogy against Pacquiao.
If the boxing world at this time really needs a fresh stimulus, then Pacquiao should pick Sergio Martinez. It should be time for Pacquiao not to stoop down to the level of Marquez. He's done. He was given the second chance, and Pacquiao should not spoil nor put himself beholden to the wishes of GBP and its cohorts.
Of course, my fellow Yahoo writer Kevin Iole would try hard to sell the latter's wishes. But, a much better challenge for Pacquiao at the junior middleweight with Martinez is timely formidable and more exciting than just seeing Marquez getting killed in the ring of madness by razor-sharp Pacquiao. Martinez holds the WBC middleweight title and has been challenging to meet Pacquiao at 154 pounds catchweight with his belt on the line.
And for those who think Marquez deserves another shot at Pacquiao just because Marquez convincingly won over Katsidis, they must be looking at the wrong angle. Marquez does not deserve one. If Pacquiao were to grant Marquez's wish, that is because Pacquiao finds it rewarding to do so. And that is such an unmerited favor, something that Marquez does not deserve. Rather, it's time for Pacquiao to move forward. If Marquez really wants it, he should wait after Pacquiao finishes Martinez.
Meanwhile, it's understandable Marquez victory over Katsidis is still fresh in the minds of the boxing fans. Self-deceived and self-righteous fans and cohorts of Marquez would rather see Marquez getting knocked out
by Pacquiao than just by any of the blooming fighters. It's quite revealing. Marquez himself has made calculations of all risk factors, especially at this stage of his career. He would rather risk his life and the last stanza of his trek to someone who has the best amount of dollars. No one can blame him in believing that he won both of his fights over Pacquiao. He really did well against the latter but not enough to get a decision to his favor.
But, Marquez seems to be avoiding other fighters out there, in the likes of Dennis Laurente who ranks second in the Philippines to boxing great Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan, Timothy Bradley, Andre' Berto and more. They are all willing to fight him.
As for Pacquiao and Martinez, they both pose a better picture for the future world of boxing.
How about a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight?
Sure, everyone wants to see that fight happening. But, why waste time again? Do we have to chase Floyd Mayweather, Jr. again simply just to get fooled at the negotiating table? Did we hear a new demand again? Maybe soon we will. If he really wants to fight Pacquiao, he'll come out of his cocoon of theories.
But, for now a new tide favors for a Pacquiao-Martinez bout.
