The Los Angeles kickoff presser for the Antonio Margarito-Manny Pacquiao fight Tuesday may be the only one promoter Bob Arum will attend.

Arum, age 78, abruptly left the media confab in Beverly Hills to rush for a flight to the Seattle area where his son John, 49, is reported missing on a hiking trip in some mountains.

Putting aside all boxing issues, let's pray that Arum's son is just lost and that searchers find him safe and sound.

Arum said that his son was reported missing on Sunday.

(I remember many years ago, before the first Muhammad Ali-Joe Bugner bout in Las Vegas, when John was booted out of the casino area for being underage. John is a product of the promoter's first of three marriages.)

Like his illustrious father, John B. Arum is an attorney.

A partner in the Seattle firm of Ziontz, Chestnut, Varnell, Berley and Slonim, he has a special interest and background in environmental law.

Arum is in his second term as a member of the Washington Environmental Council, where his biography notes said:

John rejoined the WEC board this year after a hiatus following a previous six-year term. A highly skilled environmental attorney, John is committed to working for water reforms in Washington and to helping create a state where both people and natural fish populations can coexist.

Arum also represents Indian tribes and has done so since 1990.

The New York and Arlington, Texas, press conferences will go on Wednesday and Thursday as scheduled minus the moderator.

This story was first reported, as far as I can tell, by Lance Pugmire, Los Angeles Times.
