During his Friday appearance on ESPN Deportes Golpe a Golpe, Juan Manuel Marquez expressed his thoughts on the November 13 bout between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito.

Marquez, Pacquiao’s arch-nemesis, picked the Filipino to walk away as the victor against Margarito.

“His speed will be the difference against Margarito,” said Marquez.

But during the course of the on air discussion, the lightweight champion also laid out his tactical plan for a Margarito upset.

“Margarito must keep his distance,” said Marquez, “and when he attacks, fire off combinations of three or more punches.”

Marquez’s plan is a good one, as walking into Pacquiao’s whirlwind attack is counter intuative, but it fails to take into account Margarito’s fighting style which is punctuated by flat-footed plodding, where taking three or four punches in order to land a few of his own is the norm.

Margarito has never displayed the ability to fight on the balls of his feet, keeping distance, and weaving in and out.

It must be hard for Marquez to realize that most world class fighters are not as skilled as he is.

During his appearance on the weekly boxing news show, Marquez stated that he is looking forward to the Margarito - Pacquiao fight and that he hopes Pacquiao will eventually get in the ring with Floyd Mayweather Junior.
