On January 20, 2001 Floyd Mayweather Junior defeated the late Diego “Chico” Corrales within ten rounds, knocking him down five times during the super featherweight contest.

Going into the anticipated fight Corrales was facing charges of domestic abuse against his wife and during the build-up for the bout Mayweather dedicated the fight to battered women and even went as far as publicly inviting Corrales’ spouse to ringside.

Nine years later, it looks like fate might have struck the mouthy Mayweather.

In less than a month, Mayweather has flirted with the idea of signing a promotional agreement and released a irresponsible racist-tinged video rant against Manny Pacquiao, but that will all quickly be forgotten due to a larger, alleged slip in judgement by one of boxing’s most talented men..

Mayweather was booked on Class C felony charges in Las Vegas, Nevada on Friday stemming from an incident involving the mother of his three children. Josie Harris claims Mayweather battered her in front of his children, committed grand larceny, and threatened to do harm onto her and a male friend.

The supposed fit of jealousy could cost Mayweather from one to ten years of jail time, if convicted. After being booked, Mayweather was released on bail.

For fans of boxing, if convicted, it could be the knock-out blow to a fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao.

Who would have imagined, nine years ago, that Mayweather could find himself in a similar situation as Corrales?
