After being arrested on charges of grand larceny early this morning, Floyd Mayweather's public image could scarcely be any worse right about now. Only last week he was making headlines for racial insults hurled at long time rival Manny Pacquiao, and things seem to have gone downhill for the former pound for pound king since.
Obviously as far as his recent video appearances go, he is getting exactly what he deserves with the criticism he has attracted. Regardless of whether he or his father Floyd Sr thought he was saying anything offensive or not, he still did, and didn't have the sense not to broadcast his little speech on the internet to thousands of watching fans.
Ignorance of what offends people is hardly any defense in this case, and his subsequent apology really didn't make things any better either. Few saw it as a genuine display of remorse, and as a result several groups have since publicly condemned Mayweather for his actions.
That aside, the portrayal of Mayweather as the jealous boyfriend type by his former girlfriend and mother of three of his four children seems a little strange, as does the timing.
One minute Floyd is on his year long vacation, jetting all over the world, wasting money left right and center, and generally not looking too concerned with anything going on in his adoptive home of Las Vegas.
He then returns home, makes his offensive and idiotic home movies while hanging out with his friends in his mansion, and again maintains that he is in the middle of a year long vacation.
Then he finds out his on again off again girlfriend of some fifteen years is now seeing another man, goes to her house and attacks her in the middle of the night before stealing her phone?
The alleged theft of which incidentally, is a lot less impressive than the charge of 'grand' larceny makes it sound.
The woman in question did accuse Mayweather of something similar in the past, but before the trial dropped the charges, so her credibility isn't beyond question to say the least.
Couple this with the fact that Mayweather was already in the middle of a public image crisis over his racist comments and the timing seems strange to say the least.
Not that Mayweather has a huge amount of common sense it seems, but you would have thought he might have been laying low until the controversy surrounding his video appearances died down right now. That is instead of airing any grievances he has with a woman who has already accused him of battery in the past.

Whether or not he is guilty of either the battery or grand larceny charges in this case though, Mayweather's public image has been severely damaged at this point. Former supporters are in hiding, sponsors have suddenly forgotten his name and those not keen on him from the beginning are rejoicing that he has finally been taken down a peg or two after his past antics.
So is Mayweather getting what he deserves after his past displays of arrogance and contempt for the fans, or is he the real victim in all of this, falsely accused by an old flame looking to cash in?
